The project "SUNIES" is being carried out within the framework of the bilateral cooperation between Greece and the Federal Republic of Germany and is funded by the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (GSRI) to promote competitiveness, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
The goals of the project include studying the functionality of an innovative hybrid Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system under specific load and fuel conditions and developing potential scenarios for its application in non-interconnected island grids.
The fuel cell is an electrochemical device that converts chemical energy into electricity and partially into heat and is powered by fuel and an oxidizing agent. Experimental data for the operation of the fuel cell was provided by Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe GmbH.
The research was coordinated by the National Centre for Research and Development (CERTH) in collaboration with PPC SA and the research center Gas-und Wärme-Institut (GWI), along with the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) in Essen, Germany.
